The Bench That Replaced Your Table

A third of the people who write to me about a large dining table leave with this instead. Fits the room, costs a fifth as much, nobody's come back unhappy.

Delivery note ยท The Forty-One

What went wrong

A copy of the note that shipped with the table. This is standard. Every piece gets one.

The table was drawn at forty-two inches in diameter. It is forty-one.

During the final profiling pass, the guide bearing worked loose off the router bit. By the time the cutter had told me about it, there was a gouge in a place a gouge could not stay.

There were two honest options: start again on a new slab, at cost, and delay you by nine weeks โ€” or take the diameter down by an inch and lose the damage entirely. You chose the inch. I'd have chosen the inch.

The bow ties, which were drawn as decorative, are now doing a small amount of real work. That's fine. That's what they're for.

Nobody was filming when it happened, which I found educational.
